Known Facts about Red Bananas
These strange looking bananas are known under different names depending on the growing region. They’re known as red bananas, Red Cuban, Red Spanish, Lal Kela and Colorado. But although the names can vary, one thing is for certain – the plant is extremely vigorous and highly resistant. It can produce up to one hundred fruits and these fruits are the most sought after alternative to yellow bananas.
Red bananas contain more beta carotene and vitamin C than yellow bananas, and all bananas contain 3 natural sources of sugar such as glucose, sucrose and fructose, making them a source of sustainable and instant energy.
Although red bananas taste delicious when eating fresh, it is highly recommended to eat them baked. If you’re using them for dessert, it is advised that you take them alongside other fruits like blueberries, apples, stone fruits, citrus, mint, yogurt and cream. However if you’re using red bananas for savory dishes, add chiles, cream, pork, limes, black beans, pineapple, hazelnuts and cashews.
The red bananas are considered the most important food by the Piro tribe which lives in the jungles of Peru. These bananas are given as gifts on all their celebrations and festivities. The young boys of this tribe also compete on climbing the banana trees and all of the tribe people believe that one part of the banana has a good side, while the other part has a bad side. This means that if you open a banana from the bad side, you’re inviting bad energy and spirits into your life. In order to avoid doing so, the tribe has a special technique of opening the banana which is by twisting the banana in the middle to separate the bad side of it.
Red bananas originate from Southeast Asia and India, but they have also been transported into other similar sub-tropical regions such as Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
