We’re living in a fast pacing society where health conditions are a common thing in people from all genders and ages. A big part of these health conditions are the oral problems that many of us frequently face. It is highly important that we maintain proper oral hygiene, not only to keep a fresh breath, but to maintain good oral health and avoid canker sores, tartar or cavities.
There are cases however, when even mouthwashes or toothpastes can’t help. In these situations it is always recommended to turn to natural alternative medicines as they are able to do a better job than any toothpaste or mouthwash.
A 2012 study conducted in Athlon Institute of Technology, has found that enzyme-modified oil can efficiently suppress harmful bacteria and could even remove Candida Albicans, Streptococcus, Strep mutans and other known causers of oral health issues.
The researchers were led by Dr. Damien Brady. He stated that the enzyme-modified coconut oil is a good alternative for dental hygiene products which contain chemical additives.
However, the study hasn’t yet reached a conclusive level which would allow it to be included into health products. This is why people use regular coconut oil as mouthwash. Although it is very efficient, regular coconut oil isn’t as effective as the enzyme-modified one, but it is still beneficial.
The method of using coconut oil for maintaining oral health is called “oil pulling”. It involves swishing 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes with the goal of pulling as many bacteria as possible from your mouth to the oil.
Dentistry IQ has stated that this process originates from the ancient Ayurveda medicine.
You need to follow these few rules if you want to try out the oil pulling method:
- You might fail the first few times until you adjust the oil amount in your mouth so it can have an actual event, so remember to keep trying
- Spit the oil in the trash – NOT the sink
- Rinse your mouth well after oil pulling in order to prevent leftover bacteria from moving into your system when you swallow
- This method isn’t a full and completed replacement for regular tooth-brushing.
